Her head tilted curiously, "I see," she said slowly,
looking over at the robes. "It will be awfully confining,
though," she added softly, shrugging her shoulders. The idea of
having her flesh covered seemed awkward and uncomfortable at best,
"Will--" she stopped herself, shaking her head and smiling
at him once more, "It's not important. I'll... try to sleep?"
"You don't have to be shy of asking me anything, Ardanna,"
he said softly, standing and moving over to pat the bundle, "But
sleep might do you good. You've... you've had a rougher day than most
people ever experience."
"I just don't want to pester you for answers you likely won't
know yet," she said, her voice that of a small child's, shy and
uncertain, the opposite of her usual seductive self-assurance.
He smiled warmly as he strode close to her. "Go ahead,"
he said quietly, "if I can't answer, I will tell you what I can
and try harder to find a genuinely useful response. Please," he
reached out to touch her arms lightly, "we're in this together
now."
"I was wondering when we'll be landing... if it will be
long... days?" she asked before following up, "Months?"
He smiled to her softly, "Now that I can answer, dear
Ardanna." He turned back around, letting her go a bit
reluctantly as he went to the cockpit and hit a few buttons on the
console. "Three days, two nights. I've set a course for one of
the closer systems, but not too immediate. I don't want us to be too
near them for when they set out to find us."
"Well, I suppose things will be much like they were for the
past two nights, then, but for the fact that you won't need to leave
at daybreak. And... it's smaller than our room, but..." she said
with a bit of an embarrassed blush, not wishing to make him feel
inferior in any manner, "It's a good trade."
If he took insult to her words at all, he didn't show it. Smiling
warmly to her he seemed only happy at the prospect of being so close
to her for a while at least. "Think of it like a cabin and we're
on vacation. A cozy little cabin off and away from the hustle and
bustle of the city, Ardanna. Soon we'll land and by then... I'll have
a plan for us, and we can begin to set about our new lives."
She still smiled at his enthusiasm and the sense of enjoyment he
seemed to get out of the idea, "That sounds lovely, Kieren.
Thank you."
"I'll stop bothering you so you can rest now, but... I'm
always just a few steps away if you wish my company, or have a
question."
She nodded, still hesitant. Still, she made herself comfortable,
rolling onto her stomach. She did her best to appear strong, but the
recent wounds still burned, and fear rolled in her mind. She settled
in for sleep, and a smile softened her face. She was with her love,
safe. They were together, sailing through the stars, just as they'd
both dreamed of.
