Taking supplements to enhance your mitochondrial performance is actually a well-founded scientific approach to overcoming oxidative stress. It’s
simply that taking huge quantities of resveratrol

A Metabolic Tune-Up: A Systems Strategy

All our efforts to help prevent aging and mitochondrial injury have to be coordinated. Here is what Dr. Ames says:

Problems with mitochondrial enzymes lead to less energy production and more free radicals and oxidative stress.

Enzymes can be made to work better by providing helpers, namely vitamins and minerals and conditionally essential nutrients (nutrients required under certain conditions such as unique genetic needs, extremes of age, stress, and sickness) like B

The right nutrients can help the body induce its own antioxidant defenses. For example, zinc, copper, and manganese are needed for the function of one of our own most powerful antioxidant enzymes called SOD, or superoxide dismutase, and selenium is needed for the function of glutathione peroxidase, which helps your glutathione do its job as an antioxidant and detoxifier.

Use combinations of antioxidants to soak up free radicals and prevent overproduction of oxidants in the mitochondria.

A desperate mother came to see me because her 2½-year-old son had just been diagnosed with autism. He was born bright and happy, breast-fed, and had the best medical care available (including all the vaccinations he could possibly have). He talked, walked, loved, and played
normally—that is until after his measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination at twenty-two months.

He was vaccinated for diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, hepatitis A and B, influenza, pneumonia, hemophilous, and meningitis—all before he was two years old.

After this string of vaccinations he lost his language, became detached, withdrawn, less interactive, and was unable to relate in normal ways to his parents and other children—all signs of autism. How could a normal boy be transformed so quickly?

He was taken to the best doctors in New York and it was “pronounced” that he had autism (as if it were a thing you catch like a bug), and told that there was nothing to be done except arduous, painful, and barely effective behavioral and occupational therapy techniques. The doctor told his mother the progress would be slow and she should keep her expectations low.

Devastated, this woman began to seek other options and found her way to me.

There is much yet to undo and peel, like the layers of an onion, but by seeing autism as a body disorder that affects the brain (highlighting the importance of the

), there is
so
much that can be done.

So what did I find in this little boy that gave me clues about how to treat him?

When I first saw Sam, he was deep in the wordless inner world of autism. Watching him was like seeing someone on a psychedelic drug trip.

We dug into his biochemistry and genetics and found many things to account for the problems he was having.

He had a very high level of antibodies to gluten. He was allergic not only to wheat, but to dairy, eggs, yeast, soy, and about twenty-eight
other foods in total. He had a leaky gut, which was very inflamed, and he had three species of yeast but no healthy bacteria growing in his inner tube of life, his intestines. Urine tests showed very high levels of Dlactate—an indicator of overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine.

He was deficient in zinc, magnesium, manganese, B

, vitamin A, vitamin D, and omega-3 fats. He had trouble making energy in his mitochondria (common in autistic children). The loss of energy in his cells led to his brain losing energy, so it couldn’t do its job.

He was depleted in amino acids, necessary for normal brain function and detoxification.

His blood showed high levels of aluminum and lead and his hair showed very high levels of antimony and arsenic—signs of a very toxic little boy. His levels of sulfur and glutathione were low, indicating he couldn’t muster the power to detox all these metals.

In fact his genes showed a major weak spot in glutathione metabolism, which is the main detox highway for getting rid of metals and pesticides and the main antioxidant in the body.

He also had trouble with methylation, which is required to make normal neurotransmitters and brain chemicals and critical for helping the body get rid of toxins. This showed up as low levels of homocysteine (a sign of problems with folate metabolism) and high methylmalonic acid (a sign of problems with B

metabolism).

He also had two genes that set him up for more problems with his system (COMT and MTHFR, which both control this process of methylation). He had very high levels of oxidative stress or free radical activity, including markers that told me his brain was under free radical fire and inflammation.

It seems complicated, doesn’t it? Actually it’s not. I simply worked through the seven keys of UltraWellness, saw how everything was connected, and created a plan to get to the causes of the problems. Then I helped Sam deal with all the biochemical and physiological rubble that those causes had left along the road.

So what did I do with Sam?
