Maddie

I held the phone to my ear, although the call had been disconnected twenty minutes ago, I couldn’t bring myself to hang up. Jared had been killed, and my mind was racing with thoughts, and regrets I had in my mind. Maybe I should have answered his calls, and went down and got him bail. Would it have changed his outcome? Would he have been still killed? The prison couldn’t offer much information other than it was a shower shanking. I finally got the courage to put the phone down, and sit in the chair. My heart was caught in my throat and I didn’t know how I should feel. Being that our relationship wasn’t the best, and he did things that he shouldn’t, I didn’t wish death on him.

“Habibi, you alright?” John asked, coming from the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist. He was drying his hair, and if I wasn’t in an emotional shock, I would have been turned on.

“I just got a call, and Jared was murdered,” I whispered, not wanting to believe the words that just left my mouth.

“Damn, baby, I’m sorry,” He walked over and consoled me. I wrapped my arms around him and let the tears come out. “Habibi, we need to get away, and since it’s my birthday in a few days, let’s spend some time in Miami,” He suggested.

I lifted my head and wiped my tears. “I have to arrange funerals, and talk to his family and see what’s going to happen.”

I could sense his body tense up, and hear the irritation before his words left his voice box. “Ma’ this isn’t your problem. Yeah, I get you want to go to the funeral, but look at your body. You have welt, burns and bite marks. You need to let this nigga go, what kind of hold he got over you?”

I ignored him and walked over to the window, which looked over central park. I had been held up in this hotel room, since they raided the house. I didn’t want to go to John’s house, because I didn’t want to intrude on his space. Yet, I should of, because he was over here more than he was home. I felt his hands wrap around my waist and smiled. I knew he felt bad for his words and was going to apologize; something I could never get used to.

“I’m sorry, habibi. I know he means something to you, but you have to move on. I’m falling in love with you, and I don’t want our past to interfere with our future,” He whispered, in my ear.

I snuggled up to him and laid my head back onto his shoulder. I puckered my lips and he kissed them. “I agree, babe. I’ll send some flowers and be done with it. Okay?”

He nodded his head and kissed my forehead. “Alright, I’m bout’ to head to this dinner tonight, so I’ll be back later. You sure you don’t want to go?”

“I’m sure, I need some time alone anyway.”

“Ight, get a massage and charge whatever to the room. I’ll see you later, baby,” He kissed me, again. I leaned my head on the window.

I arranged for a massage downstairs in the spa, and headed down. Soon as I stepped foot into the mud bath, I felt all the tension leave my body. I called my mother, since I hadn’t spoke to her in a while.

“Your man finally let you ass call me?” She answered the phone, I laughed because my mother had no filter.

“Ma, I haven’t been with Jared, and for your information, he’s dead,” I choked on the last words.

“Dead? What happened? I heard yall got evicted from the house, but I figured you would call me or come home when you were ready,” She said.

“He got arrested and they seized the house. I’ve been staying in a hotel with a friend,” I confessed.

“Who Tiana? Her house was in flames, they made us evacuate because they were scared it would spread. What the hell is going on with that? Shit, what the hell is going on with yall?” She asked, sounding concerned.

“Mama, I am fine, I’ve met someone and we’re getting close. I was messing’ with him, while I was with, Jared. He treats me really nice, ma.”

“He treats you nice? That’s what you were screaming when you bought Jared’s ass around here,” She retorted, I was rolling my eyes in my head, because what she was saying was true.

“I know, ma, but this time it’s different. He wanted me to get away from Jared, and put me up in this nice hotel. Especially when I didn’t have anywhere to go,” I snapped, getting upset. John wasn’t anything like Jared, and I could tell that from the short amount of time we spent together.

“Maddie, you could have come home, you act like I wouldn’t allow you back home.”

“Yeah, but how many ‘I told you so’ speeches were you going to give?” I moved my hand, so the mud wouldn’t get on the phone.

“Alright, I know I throw shit in your face, and I can’t help it, my mother did the same thing to me. What the hell is going on with Tiara?”

I giggled and rolled my eyes, again. “Tiara is fine, she’s happy, and doing her. It’s unfortunate about her apartment, but she’s staying with her mother. It works out better for her, since she’s in school and has her mom’s support with the girls.”

“At least she went to her mama, and not some man,” She scoffed.

“I called to update you on what’s going on. I’ll stop by and see you in a couple days. I love you ma.”

“I love you too, Maddie.” She ended the call and I sat my head back to relax. I needed this time to reflect and get myself right. John was willing to offer me the world, and treat me like a Queen. It wasn’t about the money, but it sure didn’t hurt.

Brandi

After another long night at the club, I climbed the stairs to my apartment, tired as hell. I didn’t even jump when I saw Jamal standing at my door. I opened the door and let him inside. He took his shoes off and walked to the couch and took a seat. I placed my keys, purse and jacket down and turned on the lights. I looked at him, and he was sitting with his head in his hands. My mother picked up the girls, so I knew I didn’t have to worry about them, until tomorrow morning.

“What’s up, Jamal? How did you find out where I lived?” I asked, sitting down at the kitchen table.

He got up and sat in the opposite chair. I lit a cigarette and took a long pull. Work was tiring, and since one of the girl’s boyfriend made her quit, we had been short staffed.

“Jared’s dead,” He said somberly, I took the cigarette out my mouth and looked at him in disbelief.

              “Are you serious? How?”

“They raided and seized his house. Shipped him to Rikers Island, and he was shanked in the shower.  I tried calling Dread, but he’s acting like he don’t care.”

“Wow, Dread is a shady ass nigga. You need to go see him face to face. You have always been a good judge of character,” I advised, knowing he was going through it.

“I don’t know who that nigga is, I’ve only talked to him on the phone.”

              “What the hell?”

“Exactly, I wasn’t thinking straight and just needed the money. He had me doing runs here and there, and was depositing the money or sending someone to pay me. Jared is the only person who has saw him, and he’s dead, so that leaves me screwed.”

“You need to stay the hell away from that shit, he’s not good news. Why all these people around him locked up, killed or missing?” I stated the obvious.

“You right, I gotta go help mama plan shit. She’s going through it, you know Jared helped pay for her house. How the hell am I going to step into his shoes?”

“Wait, so your mama was collecting rent from me, and getting money from…never mind, it’s not important. First off, your mother is a grown bitch and she needs to step up and act like one. Her days of living off your brother’s money is over. If you worrying about shoes to fill, you need to fill in to being a father. You need to think about making money for your daughters. You think I want to live in the projects forever?” I got up and went into the kitchen.

I took some meat I was thawing out the fridge and started to cook it. “You hungry? Never mind, I know your ass aint ate,” I bypassed my question.

“I want my family back, Brandi. I really do,”

“You never lost them, but you need to do more than just words to get us back. I’m tired of making a way for our girls, when they have an able body daddy. You need to get a job or something.”

“I’m gonna make it better. Now, what do you know about the Jamaicans? I know some people that might pay for information.” I thought about Jaeshawn, his disdain for them were something serious. If Jamal had valid fact and proof to back it up, he would pay him to get any information on them.

“I know he has me pick up and drop off shit in Miami every month on the first. I peeked in one of the boxes, he smuggling machine guns and coke.”

“I’ll see what I can do, but I’m not making any promises.”

“Cool, thank you, Brandi. You always come through for a nigga.” He came and kissed my neck.

I hadn’t had dick in a while, so I turned and stuck my tongue down his throat. He lifted my shirt over my head and palmed my full breast. In one swift moment, he picked me up and carried me to the bedroom. He laid me on my king size bed, and yanked my panties off. My pussy was creaming for his touch, I loved when Jamal fucked me, he was gentle, yet firm and he always made sure I got mine off before he did.

“Yes! Eat me,” I begged, damn near on the verge of tears. He opened my lips and sucked the earth, wind and fire out my pussy. If he needed a job, I would sure employ him. “Right there, daddy,” I purred.

“You aint call me daddy in a minute, you like that?” He asked, in between flicks of his tongue.

I put my head back and enjoyed the strokes and licks his tongue was giving me. This shit had me feeling good, and maybe like I should keep his ass around. I held the back of his head and grinded my pussy onto his face.

“Give me some dick,” I demanded, and he obliged.

He opened my legs and shoved himself into my wetness. I wrapped my legs around his waist and moved with his rhythm. We were fucking on each other so much, we went into the wee hours of the night. I aint have dick like that in a couple months, and I was about to take advantage of it. Maybe I could put my family back together and make it work with Jamal. Only time will tell.

Tiara

The ball and dinner was boring as hell, but I got to talk to some attorneys and higher up people. Jaeshawn even set it up where I would be able to work in their office. I wasn’t surprised that Jaeshawn had connects with the police. Like I said, he never seized to amaze me. We were sitting in the back of the car heading back to his condo. I wanted to go home, but he insisted I come home with him. I was still pissed about the big ass hickies he had around his neck. How dare he come take me out after just finish fucking her? The thing that killed me was that he never tried to deny it.

“You been ignoring me all night, I’m sorry, baby,” He said, but I continued to look out the window. I wasn’t paying him any mind. “Tiara, you being dead ass,” He touched my leg, but I didn’t it flinch or show any emotion.

“Jaeshawn, the only reason I am going back to your house, is because you’re making me.”

“So you gonna go to Miami, and not speak to me? How that work, ma’?”

“Just like this,” I rolled her eyes and turned dramatically toward the window.

We pulled up to his building and Roberto opened the door for me. I stepped out, and made my way into the building. The door man was there to take us up to the top floor. I kept my arms crossed the entire time with a pout face on. Jaeshawn kept trying to plead his case, but I wasn’t listening. If he wanted to continue to fuck with his ex, be my guest, but don’t get my feelings and emotions wrapped into something that would never be. It would never be, because I wasn’t about to play second. I wanted to be the only one.

When the door opened, I went straight up the stairs and into his bedroom. I went into the closet and changed into one of shirts. I text my mother and told her I was fine, and she told me not to worry about the girls. I had class in the morning, so I was going to go straight there from Jaeshawn’s house. I climbed into the bed and set my alarm. He came swaggering into the room a few minutes later.

“You mad at a nigga, but you in my bed,” He laughed. I didn’t find it funny.

“I can sleep in one of the many guest rooms, it isn’t a problem.” I turned over and turned the light off.

“You really going to make a nigga beg, huh?” I didn’t answer because he was irritating me. The fact that he let his baby mama get that close to him bothered the shit out of me. I was happy tomorrow was the last day before spring break. Although I still had to do online classes during my spring break, I was about to turn up in Miami. I closed my eyes, and an hour later, I felt him pull me into his arms and kiss me on the forehead. I also felt his dick poking me in the back, but I ignored it.

                                                                                    _____

I finished with school and headed uptown to have lunch with Maddie. We hadn’t seen each other in a couple days, and I wanted to catch up with her. This morning I left without even telling Jae. He was texting me all morning, but I ignored each call. I checked on my kids, and my mother said they were fine. I walked into the restaurant, and we were seated. She pulled her sunglasses off and smiled at me.

“What’s going on, mama?” She asked, lightly slapping my hands.

“Girl, everything!” I exclaimed, feeling a little overwhelmed.

“Alright, fill me in before I spill this tea. It’s getting too hot to hold,” She giggled.

The waiter came and took our order, and then I turned my attention back to her. “Are you going to Miami?”

“Yeah, John told me about it last night. I’m ready to relax.”

“Who you telling? But, tell me why Jaeshawn had hickies on his neck?”
She put her hand over her mouth and took a sip of her juice. “From the baby mama?”

“Yep, I’m not talking to him. He’s been calling all morning and texting while I was in class. I’m cool on him for right now.”

              “You going to Miami right?”

“Hell yeah, I’m not stupid now.” I took a bite of the complimentary corn bread.

“Good, well you gonna still pursue the relationship or you gonna end it?” She asked, getting comfortable in the chair.

I had to think about it, because although I was feeling the hell out of Jaeshawn, I wasn’t about to play this game with him or his baby mother. I had enough on my plate without having to worry about what my man was doing.

“Girl, I don’t know, but I know my feelings are deep for him. He has to stop whatever they got going on. Did I tell you she’s pregnant by him?”

Her dramatic ass got out her chair and walked around the restaurant, and came back to our table. “Bitch! This is before or after yall hooked up?”

“Before, the bitch showed up while we was in the midst of getting ready to fuck. With her son, call herself making me jealous. I made him tell her what it is. Which is why I’m feeling dumb as fuck now.”

“Home girl probably smiling and shaking her head. He need to quit that shit and put her in her place. Especially with a new baby coming, she about to milk that shit like a cow.”

“Right? But, what’s going on with you and Aladdin,” I joked, and she started cracking up laughing.

“John is amazing, but before I express that, did you hear about Jared?”

“Nah, what’s going on with his trifling ass?”

“He was murdered in rikers,” She revealed and I grabbed her hands.

“Are you alright? Why didn’t you call me?” I asked, damn near cradling her in my arms.

“Tee, relax. I was fucked up and I’m still fucked up, but I didn’t tell you what he did to me the last time we were together.” She lifted her shirt, and all over her body she had whelps. “This is just now healing. I can finally wear my bikini when we go to Miami.”

“Fuck that nigga and death was too easy,” I hollered, pissed that she was just now telling me this.

“Calm down, it’s over and done with and I’m trying to move on. John told me I needed stop worrying about my past if we are trying to build a future.”

“He’s right, he seems like a good guy.”

“Yeah, he has me in the trump. I’m waking up to breakfast, unlimited amenities. I don’t know how I’m going to go back to living regular.”

“What are you going to do now that the house was taken? I’ve been staying with my mama, you can too if you want.”

“I’ll probably stay with my mom too. She’s been on my case about John and not filling her in.”

              “You better start calling her.”

“I know, I know. We’ll let’s eat and hit some shopping before we leave tomorrow.” She switched the subject.

              “Alright.”

We ate all the soul food they had to offer and headed to go shopping. We went to get waxed, our nails done and other things to assure we were looking good. Jaeshawn continued to blow my phone up, but I ignored him. I would speak to him when I got good and ready. I had to make him sweat, so he didn’t do that shit again. I wasn’t about to put him with the cheating and broken heart. I went through it with Dyron and I wasn’t doing it again.
