Epilogue

Eighteen Months Later

Dylan

I am standing on Amber’s left side holding her leg and her hand and mom is on her right.  The next contraction hits and she starts to push.  We offer words of encouragement.  The doctor pops his head up.

              “One more push.”

I am breathing hard and my heart is beating so hard.  I am worried for her and the baby.  She is doing great and she’s doing it without drugs.  My wife is my hero.

The next contraction hits and she pushes again.  A few seconds later, I see our baby and hear the cry.  I breathe a sigh of relief and can’t help the tears that fall at the sight.

“You did it gorgeous.”  I kiss the top of her head.  “I love you.”

“I love you.”  She says as the doctor places the baby on her chest.  I cut the cord as the doctor instructs.

“Meet your healthy baby boy.”  He says and I can’t stop staring at him.  He’s perfect.  I look up and mom is crying.  She kisses Amber’s cheek and comes over to embrace me.

              “He’s beautiful.”  She says.

Amber holds him for a second and the nurse takes him to get him cleaned up.  They are doing everything in the room so I don’t have to leave Amber.  They doctor is cleaning her up and I kiss her.

A few minutes later, the doctor finishes and the nurse brings over our son.  She hands him to Amber.  Mom and I are looking at him from either side of her.

“Hi, sweetheart.  Happy birthday my sweet boy.  You are surrounded by so much love.”  Amber says and looks up at me.  “He’s perfect.”

“He is.”  I say and she hands him to me.  I pick up my son for the first time.  I look at my boy and my heart bursts out of love for my little family.  I kiss his cheek and look over at my mom.  She smiles at me and I walk over to her.  I pass the baby to her and she takes him.

She looks over him and looks at Amber.  “Thank you Amber.  You have completed this family.”  A tear falls down Amber’s cheek.  I wipe it away and take her mouth with mine.  I kiss her long and deep.

“I’m going to get everyone before they go nuts in the waiting room.”  Amber and mom laugh as I leave the room.

Five minutes later, I walk back into the room followed by dad, Miranda, Mia and Evan.  The baby is passed around and everyone gets a chance to hold him.

“Have you picked out a name?”  Mia asks.  All eyes fall on Amber and I as we look at each other.  I smile at her and she nods.

              “Cody Michael Morgan.”  I say.

I go to Mia and she hands Cody to me.  I bring him to Amber and she takes him.  I start singing “Happy Birthday” to him and everyone joins in.  After that, everyone leaves us alone for the night.  Cody starts whimpering as the nurse walks in to check on us.  She helps Amber get situated with nursing our son.  I am standing there watching this.  The miracle of life is truly amazing.   Amber looks up at me and smiles.

“Thank you for giving me the most precious gift.”  I say.

“You helped create this beautiful boy so I should be thanking you too.”  I shake my head.

“You did everything.  You made sure our son made it into this world safely and I’ll never be able to repay you for this gift.  I love you so much.”

“I love you.”  She says.  I kiss her forehead and kiss Cody’s forehead.  My heart is full and my life is perfect.
