Blockade Runner (15 page)

“Well,” Jeff said slowly, “I guess that’s better than nothing. After all, you don’t have much experience kissing.”

“And you do?” she said almost angrily.

Jeff laughed aloud. “No, I don’t. But anyhow, thanks for the kiss. Now let’s get down from here before this limb breaks.”

As soon as they were on the ground, Leah looked around and said, “You know, this is a nice place, isn’t it?”

“Sure is.”

“Come on, let’s go back home.”

As they mounted Feathers, she turned around to say, “Will you be going back to the army soon?”

“Sure, I’ll have to get back. But you know—” he spoke slowly “—somehow I don’t feel so bad this time. Now that we’re all right again, things don’t seem so bad. It’s good to have a best friend.”

“And you’re not jealous anymore?”

“Well, I guess I am a little—maybe of Ezra. You like him a lot?”

“Why, of course.” She smiled and squeezed his arm. “But he’s not like you. Best friends, Jeff?”

Jeff Majors put his hand over hers and squeezed it. It was a long way back to Richmond. There was still a war to fight. Tomorrow was uncertain. But looking down into Leah’s blue-green eyes, he was able to say, “Best friends always, Leah.”
