Day of Doom: The Complete Battles of Gordon Manning & The Griffin, Volume 2 (33 page)

Suddenly a voice sounded in the great studio.

There was no ordinary radio there. A bronze disk, like a gong, seemed to be vibrating.

“Manning, you score this game. Luck was largely with you. It may not be, next time. You have failed to be amusing. But I can still laugh, thinking of the future.”

Chuckles sounded in the studio, growing fainter, lost in the sound of strange music. The sergeant seemed entranced.

“If that’s the Griffin,” he said, “I don’t want anything more to do with him. I’ll transfer to the loft squad first. That guy ain’t human. Any more than that thing that went out of the window.”

“They are both human enough, Sergeant, so far as they go,” said Manning, a trifle wearily. “Is that the medical examiner?”

The sergeant nodded as the surgeon entered.

“Dead man in the other room, Doc,” said Manning. “Better look me over first.”

Al was squatting, not unlike an enormous toad, in a long disused water tank on an adjoining roof. It had been supplied with food for emergency and, with a faith worthy of a greater cause, he waited for his Master, the Griffin, to rescue him. It might take many dreary days, until the pursuit he heard scuttling on the leads died down, but he was certain that, ultimately, he would be released.
