Elaine Coffman - [MacKinnon 04] (39 page)

Epilogue

Fletcher sat straight in his chair, as still and solemn as a
man. Barrie undressed her doll for the sixteenth time. Ainsley did what she
always did whenever Adrian was sitting in his favorite chair. She climbed all
over him, dropping cookie crumbs in his shirt pocket and giving him wet kisses,
asking him to sing a song to Grace. The only song Adrian knew that was
appropriate for a doll was
Rock-a-bye Baby
, and he had already sung that
five times.

He was praying for a miracle when he got one.

The wailing squall of a newborn pierced the air. In unison
the four of them sprang to their feet and rushed out into the hallway to look
at the top of the stairs. A moment later, Molly came out. “Well? What are you
waiting for? You want to see your baby brother or don’t you?”

The children shrieked and dashed up the stairs. Adrian
followed them, then stopped outside the door as they hurried through, uncertain
for a moment as to what he was supposed to do.

“Go on in,” Molly said, giving him a nudge. “A newborn is
just a smaller version of these little people you were so afraid of. It won’t
bite you,” she said with a laugh.

Adrian stepped inside the room, standing in the doorway, and
looked at Maggie propped up in the bed, his newborn son cradled against her
breast, Fletcher, Barrie, and Ainsley clustered like peeping chicks about her.

Maggie looked up, and seeing the lost look in his eyes, she
smiled and patted the bed beside her. In three swift strides Adrian crossed the
room, sitting down beside her on the bed. His gaze traveled over three young
faces before going to that of his wife, and finally that of his newborn son,
and he felt humbled to the depths of his soul. He looked at his family, feeling
his heart flood with warmth.

“So this is love,” he whispered, and he took the five of
them in his arms.
