Firstborn (The Legacy Series) (24 page)

“Aye, aye, Sergeant Deluded.”

“One more comment outta you and no more belly rubs.”

“Please, teach us, O Enlightened One.”

And that settled that.

I had all of us settle down on the floor. The couches and coffee table had been pushed aside, giving us an open area. We started off with some mediation − strengthening their flow of energy.

“Oumm.” Amaymon occasionally oversaw our lessons and made it his job to interrupt at every possible second.

“Oummm –” He made a really wet hacking noise. “Fucking hairball.”

There was one reason I tolerated him – if t
hey could concentrate through his crap then they would learn faster, and be better prepared for the real life world, where there were potential distractions everywhere.

Then
, halfway through the lesson, the phone rang.

“I hear bells
− Am I in Nirvana?” asked the cat. He looked around. “Nope. Still in this shithole.”

I ignored him as the others just laughed.

“What?” I answered the phone.

“See why you’re needed?” whispered the cat to the girl. “He’s got the manners of a water buffalo.”

“Erik, it’s Roland.”

I waved them silent so I could listen to the cop.

“I’ll be there soon,” I said and put the receiver down. “There’s a couple of poltergeists scaring off mourners at the cemetery. It shouldn’t take long.”

Poltergeists weren’t dangerous – annoying as hell
, though. I grabbed my stuff as I spoke and turned to see my two students staring at me like I was Santa Clause and had skipped over their presents. Like I said – not dangerous. Might even be a good training exercise.

“You follow my every order to the letter, got it?” I said as I waved a finger at them. They nodded fervently.

“Fine. Come along,” I said with resignation. “Amaymon, you come, too. In case it gets too out of hand.”

“What’s in it for me?”

“I can order Abi not to touch you again.”

He immediately stood on all fours. “Your orders, Sir?”

Yeah – I found Amaymon’s weak spot. And I was having the time of my life making him do what I wanted.

I watched my team get ready and we headed for the door. It felt good – having
people to rely on, having friends. It felt like my little world was growing and, for once, the world was going to be just fine. So long as we stick together, nothing could take us down. I had allies and friends – and for the very first time in my life, I had family. They all had my back.

And something told me I would need every last one of them. We only won this round by sheer luck – a bug in Lilith’s system. Both Amaymon and Mephisto made it clear that a
fully powered Sin would be much tougher.

Tougher than any of us, actually.

But we were ready for the next one. And the next. Until the world can breathe safely again. This plane is our world, our home, and we will protect it.

This is our job, our calling.
We’ll keep everyone safe − sometimes for a fee. Hey, wizards got to eat, too. But we always do the right thing for the right cause. Of that, I was sure.

I smiled.

Okay, Universe. Whatever you got in store for us next, bring it on. We’re ready.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

As an avid reader of fantasy and fiction books, Ryan got tired of waiting for his favorite authors to publish their next novels and decided to simply entertain himself instead. He then spent the next three years learning, in excruciating detail, why it takes authors such a long time to write a book that they can live with.

Ryan lives on a tiny island, sometimes not even shown on maps, where his only friends are animated drawings and disembodied voices. And since everything in the outside world is boring to him, he took a journey inwards with some of his own made up characters.

Enter
The Legacy Series
, a story about a cursed wizard with a huge magical handicap, a talking demonic cat and an evil twin sister as they save the world from evil in its various forms.

The name
Firstborn
has a quintuple meaning: Erik is a firstborn son, the main villain is considered a firstborn in biblical terms, the book is the first of the series and it is also Ryan’s first ever book. There is also another meaning, but he cannot reveal it without divulging a secret which would unravel the end of the series.

According to his colleagues, manager, and whip-bearer, Ryan is horribly addicted to what he does. He writes and writes and writes; sometimes forgetting to do those silly things like eat or sleep. Sometimes he looks up and wonders where last night’s starry skies have gone and why are there so many people walking on the street. Sometimes he deludes himself into taking a break, by going to a movie or listening to an album – but when he does, he is watching and listening, absorbing ideas and inspirations. Sometimes he even watches you, waiting in the shadows, in darkest recesses of your mind.

Ryan would like to declare that he should not be taken seriously. He is one of those annoying and slightly insane people who have conversations with wisps of air and write their Author’s Note in the third person.
