Hard Case V: Blood and Fear (A John Harding Novel Book 5) (45 page)

As I came within a heartbeat of slitting Christova’s throat, my monsters arrived. Short bursts from MP5 automatics, and there were four dead mercenaries on the floor. I don’t have mercenaries on my crew. I have USA trained monsters, who never hesitate, and who ride for the brand: The United States of America.

“Over here, guys.” I helped lady Christova to her feet where she sobbed piteously while holding her throat.

Lucas laughed. “Oh lady… if you think that little paper cut is bad, wait until you meet Crue. You had your minions try and kill her baby boy: my godson. She’s going to teach you the meaning of pain, baby.”

Amen to that. I smiled, thinking about another vacation time ahead, possibly longer than that short stint we had after the ‘Rattler’ fight. Al said something about wanting to try soccer. Maybe they needed a coach. Then I thought of Lora wearing that last black, sheer slip of a thing she tortured me with. Oh yeah… life was good.

Phoebe Christova awoke in darkness. In moments, she realized every movable part of her body was restrained on a table with her legs wide apart, and her knees up. Phoebe also knew she was naked. When she started whimpering, and calling out, demanding to know where she was, a single light bulb turned on over the table. A minute later the sound of footsteps approaching from the darkness chilled her to the bone. The sixth sense of danger and death jolted her system into full awakening. A blonde woman with a green soccer jersey leaned over her with a smile so frightening, Christova squealed slightly in anguish.

“Hello there, girlfriend. I’m Lynn Montoya Dostiene. You decided to send killers to execute my baby boy, Clint Jr. I know who you are. My friend, John Harding, gave you to me with a list of questions. You will answer those questions, and then give me access to every account you have money in. Unfortunately for you, I’m not interested in answers or money. I will get them for my friend, but you and I have a more personal debt to settle. I’ll be right back.”

Christova began weeping, knowing nothing could dissuade the woman walking away. She had been in the Dostiene woman’s position many times, loving every second of fear oozing from her victim. When she heard footsteps again, and saw a reddish pointed glow in the darkness, Phoebe strained to see what it was. When she realized what was in the approaching woman’s hand was a red hot poker, Phoebe screamed, jerking at her bindings with every terrified ounce of strength in her body.

“Ahhhh… isn’t that sweet,” Lynn said. “Nice practice, baby, but let me show you what a real scream sounds like.”

The real screams started a moment later.
