Loving Him: A New Adult International Romance Serial (Angelique's Greek Book 5) (4 page)

“Yes,” she said. “Of course.”

Angelique had been spending a great deal of time thinking about her own future. She had come to think that, as a long term plan, buying Mermaid Hole was a good idea. Mr. and Mrs. Sands would sell before long, and she hated the thought of it going to some foreign, faceless developer, or anyone else, to be truthful. It felt like
their
place, her family and Mr. and Mrs. Sands, and Theo’s now, too. She would do everything in her power to keep it that way.

“Let’s go see them today,” Angelique said. “Mr. and Mrs. Sands.”

They had planned to go see the owners and let them know their plans, as Theo hadn’t been back since the disastrous day of his first proposal, but hadn’t gotten around to it.

“All right,” Theo agreed.

So they packed up their notebooks and left the grassy area they’d made their poetry hideaway. It was blocked from the main pathway by a tangle of vines and a few bushes. Though it made for a slightly uncomfortable entry and exit, it meant that they weren’t bothered by anyone, except the little goats who were led there by one of the workers to eat the grass when it got too long.

When Angelique and Theo reached the Sands’ Creole cottage, they found Mr. and Mrs. Sands on the veranda, drinking lemonade.

“Good afternoon,” Angelique said.

They all chorused it after her, as was the polite way to do there.

“You’ll sit and have switcha?” Mrs. Sands asked.

“Yes, please,” Angelique said. She and Theo sat down while Mrs. Sands hurried inside to get some glasses for them.

All was quiet until she returned and poured them both a glass.

Mr. Sands nodded at them both with his usual dignified air. “So, Theo, you’ve thought more about buying the place?”

Theo looked to Angelique. She smiled at Mr. Sands and sat tall in her chair, feeling like she knew just what she was doing.

“Mr. Sands, Mrs. Sands, we would love to buy Mermaid Hole, but not for another five years or so.”

Mr. Sands nodded. “That works with our schedule. Like I told Theo, we weren’t originally thinking about selling until around that time.”

Mrs. Sands looked at them almost sternly. “You will keep it as it is, though, I’m sure? No selling it off to developers at five times the price?”

“No, no, no!” Angelique said. “Of course not.”

Theo gestured around them. “It is like paradise. It would be a crime to let someone change it.”

Mr. Sands sipped his lemonade, seemingly satisfied. “That is good. We want to preserve it, our nature, so that people can appreciate the exquisite beauty we have on our island. People forget, I’m sure you know. They’ll quickly go to New York or London to live in a shabby apartment rather than stay here and soak up the beauty we have here. It is usually only older people who appreciate it. But I am glad you both seem to.”

“We do,” Theo said.

“You know I’ve always loved it here,” Angelique said. “And my sisters, too.”

“Yes,” Mrs. Sands said, smiling. “You all were the only people we’d have sold that house to. To see Mermaid Hole in such good hands would be … well, so comforting to us. It would put our minds at ease.”

Angelique beamed at them, then at Theo. “I’m so glad.”

“So,” Mrs. Sands said, raising an eyebrow. “When will you two be married?”

They were both rather taken aback by the question. Angelique was about to say something about a long time in the future or something else equally vague, but Theo spoke first.

“As soon as Angelique’s ready,” he said. “I know she’s the woman for me.”

Later, they strolled to the beach, hand in hand. What he had said had been playing in Angelique’s heart all day like some glorious symphony, but for some reason she had been too timid to bring it up. Looking over the sea, though, she gained some courage.

“Did you mean what you said earlier? That you want to marry me as soon as I’m ready?”

“Yep,” he said, right away. “It’s impulsive but a good impulsive. I know you’re the one for me.”

“How?”

“Ever since I read you that poem and you told me you’re going to stand with me. Well, I knew before that, but that was the nail in the coffin.”

“The nail in the coffin!” Angelique said, laughing. “Thanks a bunch!”

Theo laughed along. “You know what I mean.”

They strolled along and she thought for a moment. “I really think I’d like to marry you, too. Not yet, but sometime. One thing I have to see first, though, is your hometown. And I have to meet your family. Just like you’ve been here and met everyone.”

“Sounds good to me,” Theo said. “When do you want to go? Tomorrow?”

She slapped him playfully on his arm. “What about after the wedding? We’ll go to Scotland first, then to Greece.”

“I like it.”

“Ooh!” she said, an idea popping into her head. “Let’s go to Africa after that!”

“Where in Africa?”

“Well, I’m not sure. I was just thinking about roots, you see. ‘Cause I’ll know your roots and you know mine here. But I’ve always wanted to see where my ancestors came from. You can do a test, you know, to see where your lineage goes back to. So maybe I could do the test and we could go there. Like Ghana, or Nigeria, or Togo, something like that.”

Theo’s face just lit up. “That would be so awesome, to see where you’re from so far back. I’d love to do one of those myself, you know, see if I’m actually Greek or from somewhere else entirely.”

Angelique swung their arms, a decisive look on her face. “Let’s do it! Scotland, then Greece, then West Africa. Wow, we’ve got a long tour ahead of us.”

“Sure do. We’ll come back here afterward?”

“I don’t know, I guess so. Maybe we should just see where life takes us.”

Theo smiled. “You know that’s why my Ma says sometimes. Plan half, let God do the rest.”

“Hey, I like that!” Angelique said. “Plan half, let God do the rest.” She looked over the beach, long shadows cast by the golden glow of the late afternoon. “Who knows what it will be like when we come back. We’ll be closer than ever, I guess.”

Theo laughed. “Or you’ll hate my guts and never want to see me again.”

“I hope not,” Angelique said. Whenever she thought about the future these days, Theo seemed to be a main feature. Even though she knew she wasn’t ready just yet, she still found herself slipping into daydreams of them being married.

Mrs. Angelique Katrakis.

She could see their children, too, just a little bit lighter than her and a little bit darker than him. She’d let their hair grow long, she decided, even the boys, and braid it into intricate hairstyles. She could picture them running about on the beach, barefoot, and climbing trees at Mermaid Hole. Their names would be a mix of Bahamian, Greek and whichever African country she found her roots in, she decided.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked. “You look far away.”

She hadn’t quite realized what she was thinking, and was a bit embarrassed. She smiled. “Nothing. Just something good.”

“About me?”

She tapped the side of her nose and smiled. “Maybe.”

“Tell me!” he said, pretending to whine like a little kid.

She shook her head, but then he held her arm out straight and tickled her underneath, making her squeal.

“Aaah, no!”

But he showed no mercy, chasing after her after she managed to get free and tickling her until she was screaming with equal joy and terror, and they were lying on the sand together.

“Mercy!” she said.

“Okay.” He flopped down beside her on the sand. “You’ll tell me now?”

“Oh, all right. But promise you won’t laugh.”

He rolled over on his side to look at her, his brown sugar hair falling down in a curl over his forehead.

“Promise.”

“All right, then. I was thinking about us getting married. And about … about our…”

“Our children?” he said.

“Yes.”

He kissed her on the lips. “So I’m not the only one then?”

“Huh?” She couldn’t imagine that he’d ever daydream about their children like she did.

He grinned. “Wanna have seven?”

“Seven!” She considered it. “I don’t even know. I’d be grateful to just have one to start with. We can think of more later. My Aunt Vanessa can’t have any. But you know Peterson and his wife, they have six, and Peterson’s brother has nine.”

“Wow,” Theo said. “That’s a lot. Someone I knew back in my hometown had thirteen.”

“How do they manage?” Angelique said. “I would only have that many if I was rich.” Then she realized, well, if she was going to be with Theo, they were going to be rich beyond her imagination.

“Well, however many we have, I know one thing,” Theo said.

“What?”

He pushed her thin braids back from her dark face and gazed into her eyes. “That I want to be your best friend for life. Best friend and lover and supporter and fan.” He put on a silly, over exaggerated American accent. “Hey, Angelique, did you know I’m your greatest fan?”

She batted her eyelids and flicked her hand. “Why thank you, dahhhling.”

“You’re crazy,” Theo said. “Just like me.”

“Yep.”

He looked deep into her eyes, and she saw beyond their color, deep into something else entirely. “You think this can last forever?”

Angelique grinned. “Heck yeah.”

A Note From Kay Brody

I’ve been experiencing a lot of

“firsts” lately:

my first book on Pre-Order, my first official listing with a big time promoter, my first paperback version of one of my books. The list goes on and on!

It’s been AMAZING!

And now here is another one:
my first spinoff series!

If you are on my mailing list (if you’re
not
, see below!), you know that this has been coming for some time.

You also know that my second spinoff, also from “The Greek Tycoon” series, is also being released at, essentially, the same time as this one.

So I am doubly nervous & excited!

It’s an unusual tactic, I know, but it’s one that I thought fit well for this set of characters and their “world”

I hope you agree!

I would love for you to email me with your thoughts and
would be
tremendously
appreciative if you would be willing to return to Amazon to
REVIEW THIS BOOK
.

As I’ve mentioned countless times before, reviews are
so critically important
for indie authors like me and they make such a difference!

Believe me, I’ve written more reviews than I care to think about so I know they can be a pain in the butt!

But, because many promoters now base the books they accept strictly on how many 4 or 5 star ratings they have, a “star-rating” (with just a sentence or two thrown in to show it is not a fake), can be the difference between success and failure!

Either way, thank you so much for reading this book!

I can’t express how much your support means to me!

It has literally changed my life during the past year, and I know our future together is even brighter!

Here’s to a mutually beneficial tomorrow…

With Love & Passion,

Kay
