When Alfred entered the room, Dean raised the pistol. I grabbed hold of his arm with human hands.

My uncle looked down at what remained of Morte’s head and then into Dean’s eyes.

“Is this your mate, Cherry?”

“Yes, and he’s been infected. You have to do something, Alfred.”

“You picked a good mate. He’ll make a good replacement for Morte.”

“Damn, you Alfred. I said he’s been infected.”

“This guy can’t get Blood Fever. Like you, he’s immune.”

“What?”

My head whirled. I looked from Dean to Alfred and back again.

“Don’t you know what pack your father came from?” Alfred was saying. “That’s right, you’ve never seen him. He was a white werewolf, Cherry, and they seem to be immune to Blood Fever.”

“Then…he won’t die?”

“Nope.”

“And he won’t turn into a scary man-thing?”

“No.”

“Will our baby turn into a scary man-thing?”

Alfred shook his head.

“Our baby?” Dean said, eyes widening.

“Oh, God. Alfred, are Dean and I related?”

Dean shook his head. “My parents live in South Dakota. Did you say ‘baby’?”

“Yes, I did.”

He lifted me into his arms and spun me about.

Police sirens sounded outside.

“We’d better get moving you two.”

“This will be a wonderful story to tell our child,” I said to my mate as we walked out the door. “All about how I fell in love with my bodyguard.”

Dean paused and wrapped his arms around me. “In that case, I have a question for you.”

“Yes?”

“Which one of us do you think Kevin Costner will play?”

I socked him in the arm. “Very funny, Dean. Very funny.”
