Co-defendants J.P. McFarland and Jay Davern transferred to Stephen F. Austin State University, where they continued to play college football. In March of 1998, shortly after Tucker pleaded no contest, they each pleaded no contest to aggravated assault as well. They too were spared jail time. Each was sentenced to five years’ probation, 400 hours of community service, and ordered to undergo counseling and pay restitution to Bryan Boyd. Davern was hoping to sign as a free agent with an NFL team at the time this book went to press. Billy Thompson, the fourth co-defendant, stood trial for aggravated assault in March of 1998. A jury acquitted him.

Editor’s note: Marino will not be handing off to Phillips, however, who was cut from the Dolphins on July 25. Coach Jimmy Johnson now has a number of talented running backs to replace Phillips, who’d begun fumbling the ball in training camp. Johnson explained to reporters that his decision to release Phillips had little to do with the troubled athlete’s most recent brush with the law: As this book goes to press, Florida police are investigating allegations that Phillips assaulted a woman in a Miami nightclub in June.
