“No,” she said, shutting him down firmly. “I won’t let you do this. I don’t give one care what people think of us. I love you, and I won’t pretend we are strangers so as not to offend someone’s delicate senses. I won’t do it.”

He stared at her, his eyes sparkling. She’d expected an argument, but instead received a panty-melting gaze.

“You said it,” he whispered, a sweet grin curving his lips. He glanced away, looking shy that he couldn’t contain his smile.

“Said what?”

“You love me. I’ve been imagining how you’d say it the first time, and not once did I consider you’d do it while giving me the ‘what for’.”

She laughed, tipping her head back. “
I love you
, Blister. How’s that?”

“Say it again,” he murmured, that grin still in place.

She kissed his lips. “I love you, baby.”

“One more time. I want to make sure.”

“I love you.”

He cradled her face in both hands, growing serious. “I love you too, Annie.”

She knew he did, but her heart swelled hearing the words directly.

“Good. Now, can we go back out there and try this again?”

He sighed. “You sure?”

“Pretty darn.”

“That’s not very convincing.”

Taking his hand, she pulled him through the lot and back to the track. “Yeah well, I already told people about us, so if you wanted to keep it a secret, you should’ve informed me ahead of time.”

“You did?”

“Of course I did.” Shaking her head, she rounded the fence, marched to his car, and retrieved his jacket. Slipping it on, she turned to smile at him. “You can take it off me when we get home.”

His eyes went wide. “Oh, I will. I’ll take it all off.”

Leaning up on her tiptoes, she kissed his cheek. The one that mattered most. The scarred one. And he wrapped his arm around her waist.

She pulled back with a wink. “I’m counting on it. Mate.”
