Raging Kane: Book Three in the Wolfe Creek Series (5 page)

Chapter Nine

“So, tell me. How many men have you dated?”

“What kind of question is that?”

“You’re twenty years old, ridiculously stunning, and too damn perfect to not have boyfriends. Tell me how many.”

“Are you going to go after them?” I wasn’t going to tell her that it was a huge consideration. A man touched what was mine.

“Them,” I growled.

“It was only two. One when I was in junior high. He took me to a dance and kissed my cheek.”

“The other?”

I…I…I don’t want…

I lifted her off her chair at the breakfast nook, sitting her on my lap. I wanted her to know that she wasn’t in trouble. I couldn’t mate with anyone, but she never had that issue. It burned my gut, but I couldn’t do anything about it.

“Did you love him?”

“No, of course not,” she said earnestly, grabbing my face with both her hands. “It’s just we kissed a couple of times.” I snarled out and held her to me.

“Carolyn, I love that you came to me as pure as I came to you. It pisses me off that you even let another man close to you because you’re mine, damn it, but I begrudgingly understand. You knew nothing of your destiny. But know this now, no other man will touch you again. I want to rip the others apart for just considering it.” It was insane for me to feel like this considering she had been untouched when we mated, but I didn’t like the idea that anyone could have taken her heart from me.

She tried to get out of my arms, but I didn’t let her. “No, don’t move. I can’t change how I feel about it, but it’s done and over with. I shouldn’t have asked questions I didn’t want the answers to. Just so you know, if he comes anywhere near you, I’ll kill him.”

“Kane, this is too much for me. I want to go lay down.” I let her up from me, trying to figure out how to keep her from wanting to leave me.

I gave her about two minutes before I had to talk to her. I could hear her thoughts and they weren’t good.
I can’t. I don’t want…to…shit he can hear me. Stupid wolf shifter shit.

I’m sorry this isn’t what you wanted. I wish I could just walk away and leave you be, but I can’t.
She was laying on the bed with her head covered by her pillow. Carolyn mumbled from her hiding place, “Kane, what if you change on me?”

“You’re afraid of me shifting again? You didn’t seem too scared before.”

“No, that’s not what I mean. What if you stop wanting me? I’m supposed to give up the control of my private life and give every part of me over to you. What happens when I’m not enough?”

“Not enough. Those words could be used to describe our relationship. There are not enough hours in a day that I get to look at your lovely face. There are not enough words to say that I need you. Not enough time will ever pass to make me stop wanting you.”

Look at me, Carolyn.

I leaned down on the bed. “We are fated. My life depends on you. It doesn’t work the other way around. Because of your free will, you can leave me at any time. I’ll never leave you— ever. And know this, Carolyn. I won’t lose you. I’ll do anything and everything in my power to keep you mine. The thought of losing you would be unbearable. I won’t fight fair because I can’t be without you. When I told you, ‘you were mine,’ I meant it.”

Even though I was overwhelmed, all I felt was his love for me. It poured into my soul, washing over me. He thought it was a one-sided affair, but it wasn’t. I wanted him more than I thought possible. I just didn’t know how to deal with the supernatural. It seemed like something from Evelyn’s movies, not something that would become my existence.
But truth be told, I’d do anything it took to keep you, too.

His mouth was on mine, and all thoughts of the past or the paranormal were gone. All there was, was Kane. Slowly he pushed me back down and laid beside me. Everything about him exuded pheromones that called to me and demanded I give in to his desires, and I did just that.

We woke up just as the sun went down, but I didn’t want to crawl out of his arms. I giggled when he held me tighter.
No, not letting go.

“I don’t want to get up, either, but I have to pee, Mayor Holt. Is that permissible, sir?” I lifted his strong arm off my waist. He played like his arm was dead weight until I tried to bite it.

He chuckled deeply. “I suppose, but you better return quickly. I want to hold on to you until you understand you’re mine.” He may have been playful, but the look in his eyes was serious.

“I understand it, alright, but I want to be held anyway.” I rushed to the bathroom embarrassed about peeing in front of him, but since he could hear from far away, it would take him some distance before he didn’t know what I was doing.

Once I washed my hands, I ran back to the room and pounced on top of him. I want him to know that I was all in. I kissed his furry face and licked my way down his chest, nipping on his muscles. He moaned when I looked up at him and with desire in my eyes licked his lips. I slid the sheet off his lower half and his cock stood straight up in the air. It was so thick, long, and perfectly shaped. Gripping my mate’s shaft with one hand, I pressed my tongue against the large vein on the underside. He grunted, groaned, and gripped the edge of the headboard. Once my tongue pointed and tasted his tip, I felt the first squirt of pre-come on my tongue. My thighs are getting wet from my own desire.

Sensing my need, he sat up and pulled me onto his cock. I slid down his thick rod, feeling full.

It’s so thick.

You make me that way, so suck it up, sweetheart.

Yes, sir.

I felt him pulse inside me and I knew he was close, so was I. I ground down on him. I couldn’t believe how fast I’d gotten used to his invasion. He said it had to do with the mating heat. It made us perfectly compatible and insatiable.

I want you from behind, now.

He didn’t wait for me. He just lifted me off him and flipped us onto our knees. As I stretched out my arms, he smacked my ass with his wet cock. He continued to thrash me with his hardness like he was making me pay for something.

“Don’t ever doubt that you’re enough for me. You’ll always be the best thing to happen to me. My greatest reason for carrying on.”

He started to rub his cock between my cheeks, sending my body into a frenzy. I was so eager, I begged.

“Please, Kane.”

“That’s what I like to hear, Caro.” He thrust into my heat and I shuddered, coming instantly. My walls throbbed and held onto him until he gave me all of him— every last drop.

Chapter Ten

There was a knock at the door and I thought it was Kane coming back with our lunch, but it wasn’t. I opened it to find two complete strangers. They didn’t have flashing cameras so I knew it wasn’t the press; I’d know them a mile away. These two were giving me the creeps without having done anything. Both of them looked scrawny almost. There was a man who had to be about six two and maybe a hundred and fifty pounds. He looked like at one time he might have been handsome, but now he appeared a bit strung out. Next to the lanky man was an equally skinny but shorter female, she had beady eyes that looked glazed over and an awkward smile. Shit, I was so fucking scared. I wondered if Kane could feel or hear my fear.

“Hello. How can I help you?” I asked hoping they would just go away.

“I’m Gage Grey and this is Arabella Holt.” This was them? I couldn’t believe that he had a sister that was so scary looking; not wolf scary, but the creepy human type.

Gage and Arabella just arrived.
I didn’t want to tell him my suspicions about the people in front of me just in case they were really them and I was an asshole for being so damn judgmental.

Grrr…I told them I was fine.
He grumbled to himself.

Don’t be mean
. I snipped back at him.

“She’s talking to Kane,” I heard the woman say to the man.

I’m calling Hunter. He needs to keep his brother in check. I don’t like Arabella going anywhere without me.

Okay.
I was scared and feeling nervous. They both looked like trigger happy people. I wasn’t sure if they had a gun, but if they were shifters like they claimed to be, I’d be outmatched anyway.

“Sorry about that,” I apologized to them with a smile. My sister wasn’t the only actress in the family. I just chose a different path.

“No big deal. I saw Hunter and Caterina use it.”

Caterina?
I thought. I could have sworn Kane told me her name was Catherine, but I didn’t visually react to the fuck up.

Her name is Catherine.
I could hear him thinking and it was scaring me.
Babe, whatever you do stay calm. I’ll be there soon.

They’re not Gage and Arabella, are they?
I asked frightfully.

No. I’m on my way. Tell them anything you have to, but stay calm and don’t let on that you know the truth.

Okay, I love you, Kane.
I wanted him to know what I realized our first night together, just in case he didn’t make it in time.

You’re my world. I’ll be there soon, my love.
I heard the worry in his voice and knew he was coming to get me. Nothing would stop him.

Showtime.
“Please, come in. Sorry, but Kane went to the store downtown. He won’t be back for another forty-five minutes.”

“It’s okay. We’ll wait for him if that’s okay with you.”

“Of course, you are Kane’s family.” I opened the door wider, pretending that I wasn’t on to them.

I directed them to a chair and prayed that they weren’t here to harm us.

“So Evelyn, how are you and Kane doing?” They thought I was my sister.

“We’re doing well. You know how it goes.”

“Certainly.” The silence was awkward, but I didn’t know what else to say. My nerves were on edge.

“Would you like something to drink?” I asked them, needing to keep the civility from slipping.

“Sure, I’ll help,” the supposed Arabella said.

I was anxious and Kane knew it.
I’m coming, babe.

I thought it was safe to walk into the kitchen with her as long as I directed her away from the knives, but I was wrong. Before I could react, I was hit with a Taser.

I felt murderous rage when I realized it wasn’t Gage here for me. I called for Carolyn in my head but got no damn response. It freaked me the fuck out. I didn’t know what they wanted, but I had a feeling it was for me to either be dead or surrender my Alpha rights. We couldn’t do that voluntarily. We must fight to the death for it, so I knew what this was going to come down to.

I needed a plan of attack because whoever it was knew about the closeness between Gage and Arabella. I was trying not to freak out and shift before I got in the house. Being seen shifting would be devastating to our kind. Parking around the corner, I walked towards the house from the back where the wind was blowing in the opposite direction.

I saw a rented car in the driveway. They hadn’t left yet. When I looked through the window, I couldn’t believe who I saw. Why would they come after us?

Knowing I was taking on an easier target didn’t sit well with me because they still had my mate who couldn’t fend for herself. I could hear them talking.

“Dana, we’re going to be loaded.”

“I know, Dan. I can’t believe it’s this easy. Come on, we got to get her out of here before Holt comes back. You know we’re no match for him.”

“Yes, but we have his mate so he’ll surrender himself first before he lets us take her.”

“We’re getting paid big money to bring her to Maxwell.” Maxell? Maxwell Overton. He was a part of our pack, but I sent him off with his tail between his legs five years ago when he started bringing drugs into the pack. There was nothing worse than a cracked out shifter. They raged and it got insane. I had loads of help from the Wolfe Creek pack, but it was still a struggle. Weeks of withdrawal and shifting had been mad chaos and it was what Overton was going for. Now he wanted revenge.

I needed them away from Carolyn before I could do anything. They made it too easy for me. His phone rang and they both went to answer it, leaving Carolyn in the living room unattended. She groggily moved and I spoke to her.

Babe, quietly hurry to the laundry room window. I’m waiting out here.

She gave me a subtle nod before looking around then crept to the back where I could grab her. I hoped to hell they didn’t look for her just yet. I watched her get to the window with fear in her eyes. Just as she got there, her eyes bugged and I felt her pain as she screamed inside. She dropped to the ground and all the wolf in me came out.

I crashed through the window, shifting in the process. The Alpha in me roared and snarled before I attacked Dan first. He fell fast and so did the fucking weapon he used on my woman. I knocked him out and lunged at Dana next. There was no room for mercy. Striking her across the face, I laid her out. Dan must have come to while I was dealing with his cracked-out sister because he was on me before I had a chance to react. That was when Caro pulled a Cat move and shifted into a beautiful, deadly grey wolf. She attacked Dan, blindsiding him in the ribs, cracking them on impact. The crunching sound was followed by him wincing in pain. I couldn’t believe they broke so easily, but then again he looked wiry and weak before he shifted. Gaining my bearings, I turned back to my human form. I grabbed the Taser and zapped them both.

Turning to my woman, I saw her shoulders hunched down as she breathed heavily.

Are you okay?
I asked. She was a full-blown wolf, and this was new for both of us. I didn’t have a problem with it at all, but I was worried this was all too much for her.

I feel different, but as long as you’re safe, I’m wonderful.

I closed my eyes in relief.
Thank you, my love.

Are they dead? They don’t seem dead.

No, they’re not, yet. By the way, my love, you’re a beautiful wolf, too. Damn, I’m lucky.

She smiled revealing her sharp teeth, but it waned fast.
I’m tired, Kane. Is it always like
this?

Shift back, love.
She did as I asked, and I scooped her weakened body up and took her to her room.

“Stay here for a moment. I’m going to deal with those two,” I whispered as I laid her down on the bed.

I got dressed and told her to rest. “Please be careful, Kane.”

“I will.”

I didn’t know what to do with them. It wasn’t like I could just get rid of them. I looked for bite marks or tears in their flesh, but there weren’t any, which worked for what I had in mind. I called the cops and told them there had been a break-in and that the people looked like junkies and they needed to come quick. Dana hadn’t shifted. I didn’t know why because it was our natural reaction when we were threatened. I had a feeling it had something to do with the drugs.

I shocked them one more time, enjoying their pain before going into the bedroom and helping Carolyn up.

“Let’s get you dressed, the police will be here soon.”

“The police are coming? Won’t they tell them about being shifters?”

“No, sweetheart. They know that the consequence would be death. There was no way that they’d say anything. They would be experimented on if they weren’t killed by the cops.”

“Yeah, I’m sure the shifting would have been freaking crazy and they would shoot on sight.”

She hurriedly dressed and packed a bag.

Just as we walked back to the living room, I saw that Dan was gone. He’d left his sister there to take the fall. I rushed to the front door and the car was missing, too. The bastard. I’d find him one way or another.

Dana was groggy but started to move when the police arrived.

I greeted them when I opened the door. “Hello, Officers.”

“Sir, who are you?” They asked procedurally.

“I’m Kane Holt.”

“Wow, I saw you on the news the other day with that actress,” the big, bulky officer said with enthusiasm.

“Yes, she’s going to be my sister-in-law.” They were star struck, not like they should have. “One of the attempted kidnappers is over there.” I pointed to Dana. “The other one got away.”

The other officer checked on Dana before cuffing her. They found an empty clear plastic bag of what seemed like coke next to her.

“What’s this? Are you doped up?” He waved the bag in front of her. Her eyes followed the bag like a fiend.

“I didn’t do anything! Let me go, you big jerk!” She started struggling with the officer then began to twitch before convulsing and foaming at the mouth.

They called for an ambulance, but it was too late. She had no pulse. Once they took her, they let us go, and said they would be in contact with us if they had any other questions.
