Revelations (The Revelations Series Book 1) (33 page)

Then to her left a blackened horizon appeared with a dull fog that brought with it a slight chill making her wrap her arms around herself. As she watched the fog drift away, another handsome boy with short black hair stepped out of it and started to drift towards her. With him a feeling of excitement hung in the air. They both held out their hands as if inviting her to go with them. Neither one said a word. They just stood there, smiling as if urging her to choose one over the other. She desperately wanted to go with both of them. She glanced back and forth between the two, not knowing which one to choose, but knowing she had no choice but to choose one of them. As they each glided closer to her she gasped as she was finally able to see their faces. To her left stood Alex, and to her right, was Dylan.

Jenna bolted awake, her heart racing. She glanced down at Dylan who was still fast asleep. Her mind was racing. She now understood the dream and what it meant. The boy to her left had been Alex, the bad boy who was tempting her to choose him and evil. But, if she was right and her dream had been telling her all along that Alex was a half demon, then did that mean Dylan was… no, he couldn’t be. She wouldn’t even entertain that notion. She pushed that thought out of her head and lay back down on his chest and closed her eyes. As far as she was concerned, Dylan was Dylan and nothing more.

TEARS
streamed down Rebecca’s battered and bruised face as she ran through the forest. A thin trickle of blood ran from the corner of her lip. Her torn dress hung off her pale scratched shoulder, her eye starting to turn a purplish blue from where he had hit her.

Oh God, what did I just do? They won’t understand, they’ll sentence me to death for sure,
she thought as she shoved the branch aside with her trembling hand. She needed to get to her parents and explain what happened before the townspeople found him.

As she stumbled out of the forest and into her backyard, four men and two women with the brightest blue eyes Rebecca had ever seen suddenly appeared before her. Each wore a long white robe with red crosses stitched on them across their hearts.

“Stop Nephilim!” one of the men exclaimed.

Rebecca stopped, her head still spinning, her body weak from fighting off the attack.

“Who are you?” she asked her eyes shifting from face to face.

“You mean to tell us you have no idea who we are, or why we are here?” the same man asked. He stood there, boldly intimidating. His eyes studied her with a certain intensity.

Rebecca merely shook her head. Her eyes darted nervously around looking for a way around them. She needed to get to the house, to her parents. They need to know what had just happened.

The man took a step towards Rebecca. “Well, dear Nephilim,” his lips twisted into a cynical smile. “My fellow angels and I are here for you.”

Rebecca’s heart skipped a beat. She had never before seen a more chilling smile. “You must have the wrong person. My name is Rebecca, not Nephilim.” Again she tried to look for a way around them, but they had her blocked in on all sides except back into the forest. And, that was the last place she wanted to go.

A nasty sneer played on the man’s lips. “We know your name, silly girl. Don’t you know what a Nephilim is?”

Rebecca shook her head. The man’s voice was absolutely emotionless and it chilled her. “No.” Fear grew in the pit of her stomach as the man glared at her.

“Well then, I do believe you’re in need of a history lesson.” The man took another step toward her. “You see, my dear, not all angels can resist the lure of a human woman and sometimes fall prey to their seductive charms. Some of these women bear children of the angels, which God has deemed abominations. When these children reach the age of seventeen they begin to develop abilities that are similar to those of their angelic fathers. “We,” the man gestured towards his fellow angels. “find these kids and offer them a choice. They can either join our army and help in the fight against evil, or they will be destroyed.”

Fear knotted inside Rebecca as she took a nervous step backwards. “I don’t understand what this has to do with me. I’m not one of these Nephilim you’re talking about.”

A sudden icy contempt flashed in the man’s eyes. “Oh, but you are, dear. And, what you just did to that young man proves it.” The man circled Rebecca. “We have been curious about you for some time now. But, since your real mother died shortly after childbirth, we couldn’t question her about who your father was. So, we’ve been observing you, and up until a few minutes ago we weren’t sure whether you were merely a witch or a Nephilim. So, instead of recruiting you for our army we let you lead your own life for the past year, but the abilities you just used prove your heritage. And, since you used them on a human we have no choice but intervene.”

Panic welled in Rebecca’s throat. How did these people know what she had just done? “But, I had no other choice. He attacked me. If I hadn’t used my abilities he would have killed me.” A warning voice whispered in her head as she took a step backwards. She couldn’t believe this was happening.

“It doesn’t matter.” The angel’s voice hardened. “One less abomination is fine with us.”

As the angels converged on her Rebecca swiveled quickly and fled into the woods. A rush of adrenaline shot through her. She wasn’t going to stand by and let these people kill her. A squirrel scurried up a tree to hide in its nest as Rebecca fled for her life through the forest. Leaves and twigs crunched beneath her feet as she tried to find a place to hide. She came around an old oak tree and came to a sudden halt when the angels appeared all around her. A female angel grabbed her and held her tight.

A jolt of panic ripped through every inch of Rebecca’s body. Her screams echoed through the forest as a burning sensation developed within her. The next thing she knew the forest was ablaze. She struggled to free herself as the blue and red flames inched toward them, but the angel held her tight. Suddenly an explosion ripped through the forest and Rebecca could feel herself flying through the air the angel still holding on tight. They slammed to the ground and lay there, limp, and unmoving. At the moment of impact Rebecca felt a strange sensation seep into her body and then her world went black
