“No.” Simon shook his head. “Amazingly, your link is established
because
of the change.”

“If not Niki then who?” Dean asked from beside his mate.

“Him.” The full-blooded wolf wagged a finger in Alek’s direction.

“Me?” He sat up straighter in shock.

“It’s definitive.” Simon pulled the chart back to him and spouted off some medical mumbo. “In other words. If you all recall that I explained how true mates have a genetic match. Those matches can lead to fertility where there shouldn’t be any.” He pointed to Niki and Dean. “In your case Alek’s DNA is altering your body on a molecular level. Filling in the gaps that had been removed.”

The room became filled with astonished murmurs and curiosity.

Then Brita recalled something. “But, Niki mind linked with me on the first day we came to the clinic. I hadn’t even been marked yet.”

“Hm, fascinating.” Simon tapped a finger against his pursed lips as he mused. “Even the smallest amount would have started the change reaction.”

“Like in a kiss maybe?” Bhric asked.

“No. No. A simple kiss does not provide any clear avenues into the bloodstream to make DNA changes.”

“Then I don’t see how—”

“You cut yourself on my teeth.” Alek interrupted her.

“What?” Then she recalled the kiss. The table. The amazing feel of Alek inside of her. Finally, the headiness when she stroked his teeth with her tongue. He’d been trying not to mark her, per her request, and she had gone a little too far in her need for him.

Alek leaned in, pressed his lips to her ear and whispered on that low intimate level, “Never too far.”

She shivered. Feeling a little light headed with need, she asked Simon, “What now?”

“We’ll do more studies. And as I get more information I’ll let you know. Until then, enjoy,” Simon smiled.

“Will I be able to shift?”

“I’m certain it will happen sooner rather than later.” Simon pointed at her arms, and the clear evidence of the tawny strands.

She started to ask him, which animal was dominant. However, she realized she didn’t need to know. Not only did she recall the description Alek had thought while fucking her against her Jeep. But she
knew
. There was cougar inside of her waiting for its moment to emerge.

“Thank you, Doctor Simon.” She started to rise, the urge to run, not away but free into the woods stirring deep. She didn’t think this was going to be the moment she suddenly shifted but she wanted her cougar to know it was alright when the time came.

“Are you going to tell her she’s carrying or not?”

“Not.” Simon, Niki and Dean barked at Bhric’s announcement.

“I was hoping to feed her one revelation at a time. I’m not completely out of touch with other emotions,” Simon aimed a hard glare at Bhric.

Bhric shrugged as if the doctor’s words held no consequence to him.

“Is he correct?” Alek asked.

“Am I pregnant?” She reached for Alek and absorbed his strength as his hand clasped hers.

“Yes. Niki proved that shifting will not harm the fetus as we originally suspected. However for you, take it easy. Your body is going through a lot and has a lot more to deal with. For your health take it easy,” Simon repeated.

She glanced at Alek, unable to believe it. Just over a week ago she’d come here trying to find a piece of something that was real. Something that a connection to a life and she got so much more.

“I’m the one with more.” Alek kissed her. “I love you.”

Her vision became blurry. “Can I go home with you?”

His hand squeezed hers tight then he drew her to him and embraced her, burying his face in her neck.

Her body heated and throbbed for him as her heart rate picked up.

“We better go, before we’re involuntary observers to what is going to go down on this conference table.” Bhric was the first to rise and head to the door.

The other three followed.

Had Bhric stayed, he would have realized how wrong he had been. They didn’t use the table at all, but the chair Alek was in after Brita stripped them both in a blink of an eye.

“You’re right, Alek, the mountains are beautiful,” Brita said following her shift from a sleek, tawny hued cougar, two months later. Two weeks ago her cat had finally emerged. He had awakened in bed with the feline presenting itself in the bed beside him, curled up and sound asleep. It had taken him thirty minutes to get Brita to relax enough to retract her animal. Now her shift happened on a magic breath like the rest of them.

On nights like tonight, she was a beautiful sight as she was the only light spot in the mist of ebony jaguars.

It was after midnight, Alek stood beside his nude mate by the lake in Toccoa. Winter had set in and snow covered the ground. Others in the Zusmen prowl were starting to arrive fresh from a run. They had all taken Brita into their community and showed her love and the real meaning of family.

She’d proudly cheered him on as he battled other males for his confirmed place as Alpha. The one that warmed his heart were his parents and sisters. They made her an instant part of the family by helping her redecorate his house. Helping her bring the small feminine touches.

“It’s nothing compared to you.” He pulled her into his arms, fitting her back to his chest. Slipping his arms around her waist he cupped her belly. She was starting to show now. He kissed the mark on her shoulder that he made sure he took every opportunity to place again and again. She purred and settled her ass to his hardening groin.

Their baby moved and brushed along his palm.

Splashing began as another dove into the icy water.

“Don’t you think we should join the fun?” Brita asked.

“In a minute, I just enjoy holding you beneath the moonlight like this. Watching over our prowl.”

“Our prowl, I do like the sound of that, mate.” She caressed the back of his hand.

“Want to know what I sound like?”

She bumped back against his stiffening cock. “I have a pretty good idea by your thoughts.”

“Good, then I shouldn’t have to work hard to convince you to sneak away with me.” He lowered a hand and cupped her sex, feeling her heated wetness.

Turning in his embrace, she said, “No you won’t, but on one condition.”

He listened to the word in her mind as he held her body to his. “Yes, you can be on top. As long as I can taste you in that same position first.”

She lifted her hands and ran her fingers through his hair, scratching across his scalp like he enjoyed. “Have I told you that I love you, lately?”

“Yes, but you know I’m never satisfied until you’re screaming it.” Taking her hand, he ran off toward the copse of trees they had recently exited. His life was complete, the Goddess had brought a fearless woman as his mate. She was strong, independent but more importantly she had developed the strength to stand by his side no matter what came their way.

Brita had been what was missing, what he sought to find. His mate for life.
