The Amber Stone (34 page)

“You’re really a descendant of the Hamiltons?” Teresa said. “I never would have guessed.”

Sean’s face split into a wide grin that hinted at a brutal, lust-filled, yet intriguing history. “Let’s just say we’re a side that they’re not ready to claim.”

Michelle sent him a significant look. “And you’re behind the recent influx of money in that county, aren’t you?”

He shrugged. “I know some people who’d like to give the place a chance. It can be revitalized.” He held up his hand. “And that’s all the questions I’ll answer for now.” He took Teresa’s hand. “Come on.”

Teresa followed, now understanding his interest in jobs and possibly opening a practice. She wondered if he would be open to having part of his practice devoted to the use of alternative medicine.

“What are you thinking?” Sean asked when they were far enough away from the others.

“How much you like to be alone.”

He turned to her and winked. “Not anymore.”

Teresa stopped walking and wrapped her arms around his neck, sending him a mock look of rebuke. “I’m glad.”

“Me too,” he said with feeling, his steady gaze giving voice to what no words could say. He kissed her.

Teresa drew away and turned to the water, where the sun’s rays danced along the surface. “I’m so happy. Sometimes I wonder if this is all just a dream.”

Sean wrapped his arms around her waist, clasping her body tightly to his. “No, Sweets, it’s all very real.”

Epilogue

Late 1700s

Martin lay face down on an old cot, his back raw from the lashings by his new master. He briefly thought of the girl he’d claim as his woman and the child she now carried. He now had a reason to live and dreamed of the day when he could turn his rage into something that would defeat this injustice. But he’d be patient.

He reached into his pocket, although the action pained him, and pulled out the object he’d kept for years. He’d never forget his friend’s kindness and wished there was a way he could repay him.

He glanced down at the amber stone in his hand. It was a sacred stone to him now. A stone he’d pass down through his family. And as he gazed at the stone, he wasn’t to know that the importance of the amber stone would stay within his family line for generations, traveling lands and oceans. It would survive the heartbreak of separations, wars, and the joys of freedom, along with tales of a friendship and a chance at a new life.
