The Child's Elephant (40 page)

Returning to England, Rachel studied for a PhD on modern and contemporary British poetry. She continued to travel from time to time, and most importantly to Africa, where she was introduced to the animals and way of life on the savannah by Tony Fitzpatrick. Tony had lived for many years with Joy and George Adamson on their “Born Free” camp and now looks after a wildlife reserve on the Kenyan/Tanzanian borders. Many of the details of bush life in
The Child’s Elephant
come from this time. But they also come from a trip to Uganda.

After completing her PhD, Rachel joined
The Times
: first on the books pages, then as an obituarist and then as a leader writer, before, turning a long-standing interest in painting into a profession, she stepped into her current role as the art critic ten years ago.

It was as a leader writer that Rachel first found herself learning about Joseph Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda. She recently travelled there, under the auspices of the charity Send-A-Cow, to interview former child soldiers about their experiences. And it is against the backdrop of this country and its conflict that her book
The Child’s Elephant
is set.
