They Told Me Not to Take that Job: Tumult, Betrayal, Heroics, and the Transformation of Lincoln Center (55 page)

Of course, performing art is part and parcel of a larger economy and of leadership and management themes that operate elsewhere. As Stephen Sondheim reminds us in
Sunday in the Park with George
:

. . . Art isn’t easy

Even when you’re hot

Advancing art is easy

Financing it is not

A vision’s just a vision

If it’s only in your head

If no one gets to see it

It’s as good as dead

It has to come to light

Bringing art to light is the stuff of raising funds, selling tickets, controlling costs, and promoting productivity. Very useful guides to all of these challenges can be found in this book selection. Leadership and management observations abound, including how best to recruit first-class talent and how best to motivate and monitor superior performance.

Part of my service at Lincoln Center coincided with America’s most significant and prolonged economic downturn since the Great Depression. Americans are angry with how this deep recession came to pass and with their view of the winners and losers. They are upset at Wall Street and view its leaders as indifferent to the plight of those on Main Street. Their trust in government at all levels and in corporations hovers at all-time lows. Their perception of paralysis in politics and cronyism in the marketplace is not favorable. It is in this setting that matters of governance and accountability in the nonprofit sector assume major prominence. Very thoughtful guidance on how the third sector can retain the confidence of its donors and customers can be found among the entries below.

The role of a nonprofit university, hospital, museum, performing arts center, social service organization, think tank, or advocacy outfit is vital to the health of our democracy. These institutions and the professionals and volunteers drawn to them offer important contributions to America’s economic competitiveness. In number and quality, our NGOs know no equal in the world, nor does the size and scope of American private philanthropy. In their recognition of these realities and their favorable impact on our citizens and our community, selections from this bibliography will serve the reader well.
