Working Him: A Billionaire Romance (9 page)

Epilogue:  Rachel

Three Months Later, Miami

“Where are we going?”

I followed Garrett out onto the beach, carrying my sandals in my hand as he trudged forward, intent on heading somewhere. We had just enjoyed a nice dinner that we had cooked ourselves, something that we were trying to do as a couple. So far, it had worked and everything had been edible. But then he had ushered me to his car and driven us out here to the beach, where we had climbed out onto the sand. While I loved coming to the beach, I still wasn’t quite sure what Garrett was up to.

The last three months had been the best of my life. After closing the case, I had quit my job and moved to Miami, helping Garrett dig his company out of the mess that Travis had created. Currently the former co-owner was in jail, awaiting charges on both his fraud and the attempted attack on me and as far as I knew, Garrett had not contacted his former friend at all. Travis was gone from our lives for good. Tomorrow Christine was coming to visit us and meet Garrett for the first time and I couldn’t wait to bring two of the most important people in my life together.

Garrett looked back at me and grinned, making my heart turn over in my chest, that fluttering feeling never getting old. I loved the man, everything about him and though he hadn’t officially said the words to me, I could feel the love in everything he did for me, whether it was in his love making or something cheesy, like coming home to a buffet of Chinese food in his condo. He truly was my soul mate.

“Well,” he was saying, stopping on the breezy beach and looking up. “Here it is.”

I turned and looked up to see a beautiful beach house in front of me, with a wide sweeping terrace that overlooked the ocean. “What’s this?”

“I know it’s not perfect,” he started, grabbing my hand and leading me towards the steps that led to the pool. I could feel the excitement in his grip, wondering where it was coming from. “But with a little work, I think it’s going to be perfect for us.”

“You bought this house?” I asked, surprised. I had always wanted to live on the beach, but this house was beyond my wildest dreams.

“I did!” he said as we walked up to the terrace. “It’s got five bedrooms and every room has the most amazing view of the ocean.”

I was lost for words as we walked through the back door and took in the modern view of the kitchen and living room. As we rounded the corner, he pulled me into a bedroom, the flicker of candles catching my eyes. Before me were rose petals all over the white floor. Candles of various shapes and sizes were also amongst the roses, the entire room looking like it was on fire.

“What?” I managed to get out, smiling and turning in a slow circle. “What is this?”

Garrett grabbed my hand and tugged on it, getting me to notice that he was kneeling before me, a ring in his fingers. “Rachel, I can’t even explain to you how much I love you. You are what I think of when I wake up, why I go to work and strive to be a better man. I know we haven’t been together in this capacity long, but I feel like we’ve never been apart. Will you marry me?”

“Oh my god,” I breathed as he looked up at me expectedly. He loved me. He wanted to marry me. It was too good to be true. “Of course I will marry you! Yes!”

Garrett grinned and slipped the elegant diamond on my finger before rising, gathering me into his arms. “I love you, Rachel.”

“I love you, so much!” I exclaimed, throwing my arms around his neck and hugging him tightly. He chuckled and spun me around the room, setting me down slowly before cupping my face with his hands and pressing a kiss on my lips, a kiss that held promise and a future.

“I’m going to be good to you,” he promised, his thumbs stroking my cheeks, the intensity in his eyes taking my breath away. “I swear it.”

I smiled. “Garrett, you are already good for me.”

He kissed me hard and pulled back, looking a bit sheepish. “So what do you think?”

I looked around the room, a smile on my face. “You really bought this place, didn’t you?”

“I think it’s time to leave my old life behind,” he said with a sigh. “I’m going to work with George again.”

I thought of the man that was his father figure, a wonderful man who seemed to support his stepson unconditionally. “Are you sure?”

He nodded, looking around the room. “It’s time to move on, Rachel. I let all of this go to my head and I’m just very lucky I wasn’t as stupid as Travis.”

I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around his waist, so proud of the man he had become. “I’ll do whatever you want. We are a team.”

He breathed into my hair as I listened to his steady heartbeat under my cheek, grateful that we had been brought back together. Whatever he wanted to do, I was going to support it. He was my other half, the perfect match.
